𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗜𝗗 𝘃𝘀. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀

Biometric technologies such as Face ID and fingerprint scanning are actively discussed in the financial technology industry. Let's figure out which one is more reliable in the context of financial transactions.

Face ID uses an infrared TrueDepth camera that projects more than 30,000 dots to create a 3D map of the face. The data is converted into a mathematical template stored in the Secure Enclave, Apple's secure chip. The system adapts to changes in appearance, such as wearing glasses or a mask 116.

Fingerprints (Touch ID) scan unique patterns on the skin. Modern sensors analyze not only surface lines, but also subcutaneous layers, which reduces the risk of counterfeiting. The data is also stored in the Secure Enclave as an encrypted template 19.

Face ID can be fooled with 3D masks or deep fakes, although this requires significant resources. The system may also make mistakes when identifying close relatives or children under 13.

Fingerprints are vulnerable to physical copies: attackers can create fingerprints from photographs or 3D printing. However, modern capacitive scanners are more difficult to fool than optical ones.

Face ID can be activated by pointing the device at the user's face without their consent (if the attention verification function is disabled) 16.

Touch ID requires physical contact with the sensor, which is more difficult to do secretly.

Face ID is popular in Apple Pay and mobile wallets due to its speed and lack of contact. It is often used in retail and online payments.

Fingerprints are more often integrated into banking applications and smart cards. For example, biometric cards with built-in sensors are becoming a trend in Europe.

Which to choose?

Face ID is preferable for public places due to its contact and protection against “peeping” of passwords.

Fingerprints more accurately identify the user, but require physical contact and are vulnerable to sophisticated attacks.

For maximum security, experts recommend combining biometrics with two-factor authentication or complex passwords.
